Wash. picks Tropos, Itron for $38M smart grid project

Tropos Networks Inc. and Itron Inc. said they have been selected for a smart grid demonstration as part of a $38 million larger project in Pullman, Wash.

Sunnyvale-based Tropos specializes in wireless IP broadband technologies, while Itron (NASDAQ: ITRI) is focused on smart metering. They were picked for the project by Spokane-based energy company Avista Corp. (NYSE: AVA).

The project is expected to use smart technologies “to automate part of the energy distribution system to increase system reliability and reduce outage time, incorporate renewable energy sources, and provide customers with more tools and information to monitor their energy usage,” according to a prepared statement.

The grid communication will incorporate Tropos’ wireless broadband technology.
