GE's solar plant boosts Colorado's cleantech cred

General Electric Co.'s decision to build a $300 million thin-film solar-panel plant — the largest in the country — in Aurora, Colo., bolsters the metro area’s reputation as a cleantech hub and will help entice talented workers to the area.

“The more companies that are in solar in Colorado, the more that creates a bigger and bigger draw for talent,” said Ron Eller, president and CEO of Thornton, Colo.-based Ascent Solar Technologies Inc.

Ascent makes flexible, thin-film solar panels with a plastic backing, which can be integrated into tents and other flexible materials.

“We’ll be able to benefit just from Colorado being known as a solar leader, because that attracts good people,” Eller said. “They want to go where the leadership is.”

The Denver area already is home to many solar-focused companies.
