Ascent Solar launches solar-powered iPhone case
Ascent Solar Technologies said Wednesday it is introducing a case for Apple Inc.'s iPhone that will charge the phone using a thin solar panel.
Thornton-based Ascent (Nasdaq: ASTI) primarily makes thin-cell solar power panels that can be used in a variety of settings.
The new Ascent product, part of its EnerPlex consumer line, is a case for iPhone 4 and 4S models that incorporates the company’s CIGS (copper-indium-gallium-selenide) solar cells on the back of the case as well as a thin battery to store power.
The case is designed to allow longer use of the iPhone than its own battery would allow.
“The charger adds minimal weight and size to an iPhone smart phone, yet provides significantly improved battery life by harnessing sunlight for electric power,” Ascent said in a statement.
Ascent shares soared Wednesday on the announcement.
