Fake meat company lands investment from Twitter founders
Beyond Meat, that boasts a vegetable-based product that tastes and acts like chicken, is backed by Twitter's cofounders.
Demand is high for a plant-based meat substitute with a taste like chicken that has received financial backing from Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Ev Williams, and Whole Foods grocery stores plans to have it in all Northern California delis by Monday.
Stone recently announced an investment in the manufacturer of the product, Beyond Meat, on the website of the Obvious Corp., the company he and Williams co-founded with fellow Twitter alum Jason Goldman. Stone, a well-known vegan, exhorted the environmental and health benefits of reducing meat consumption, as well as the avoidance of pain and suffering to animals.
Matthew Mestemacher, Whole Foods' coordinator for prepared foods for 39 stores covering the greater Bay Area and east to Reno, said he has seen many, many products, and given the interest and the quality of Beyond Meat's offering - which he said can often fool people into thinking its actually chicken - has the potential to be a big hit.
Beyond Meat has last year also received funding from Silicon Valley venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
