Kohl's adds to its roster of solar-powered stores
Kohl's Department Stores said Thursday that the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based company will expand its solar program by 25 percent this year, installing solar panels at approximately 30 more Kohl’s locations.
The new sites include stores in California, Connecticut and New York, bringing the total of solar locations for the company to 150 across 13 states.
The solar panels will supply 20 percent to 50 percent of each store’s energy, construction began this spring and is expected to be complete by the end of the year. With the completion of Kohl’s 30 new locations, the company’s portfolio of solar sites will produce more than 74.2 million kilowatt-hours of energy annually, the equivalent of preventing greenhouse gas emissions from 10,032 passenger vehicles or the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 6,380 homes for a year, according to the company.
“After adding 20 solar locations in 2011, we’re pleased to continue growing our solar program in 2012,” said John Worthington, Kohl’s chief administrative officer. “Not only do our solar locations provide an immediate cost savings to Kohl’s they serve as examples of our environmental commitment in action.”
Kohl's is regularly featured on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ranking of green power users, along with Intel, Microsoft, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods Market.
