Utilities trade coal for natural gas
Coal-derived U.S. electricity is projected to fall to its lowest level since World War II.
According to USA Today, the share of electricity from coal will fall below 40 percent for the year because utilities are moving to cleaner and cheaper alternatives.
Replacing coal is natural gas, which produces far fewer emissions of toxic chemicals and gases that contribute to climate change. This year, natural gas will produce 30 percent of the country’s electricity, according to the article.
Because of the shift to natural gas, the JEA Finance and Audit Committee recently recommended a fuels charge decrease.
