Waste-to-natural-gas plant underway in California
Gold River, Calif.-based Clean World Partners and Sacramento’s Atlas Disposal Industries are set to break ground Thursday on an organic waste recycling center that will start by converting 25 tons of food waste per day into natural gas.
By next year, the facility at 8550 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento, is expected to be expanded to process 100 tons of waste per day, which would make it the largest commercial-scale, high-solids anaerobic digestion system in the United States.
The recycling center will convert food waste collected by Atlas Disposal from area food processing companies, restaurants and supermarkets. When completed, the center is expected to produce 1 million diesel gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas and 2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
The natural gas will be used to fuel Atlas’ growing fleet of clean-fuel vehicles, as well as vehicles of municipalities and agencies.
According to the two companies, the facilities will create 16 permanent jobs and generate more than $1.1 million in annual combined tax revenue for the city, county and state.
