Tesla fans turned up the volume on Twitter after Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney called the company a loser.

It was no surprise that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romeny referenced Solyndra in last night’s debate. The bankrupt solar firm, which was backed by government loans, has been a consistent attack line from Republicans against President Barack Obama’s administration since it failed last year.

But, judging from Twitter, there was a collective gasp from Silicon Valley when Romney put Palo Alto-based electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors alongside Solyndra as a “loser” company.

“Don’t forget, you put $90 billion — like 50 years worth of breaks — into solar and wind, to Solyndra and Fisker and Tesla and Ener1,” Romney said to Obama. “I had a friend who said, you don’t just pick the winners and losers; you pick the losers.”

“Wait, did he just call Tesla a loser? Have you driven one? They are awesome,” tweeted Brian David Eoff ‏(@bde).
