Sacramento utility district to explore biz, residential solar
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is launching a study of the extensive deployment of photovoltaic solar cells on its electrical grid.
The study will be done in conjunction with Millbrae-based Stem Inc., which develops monitoring and optimization programs for electric utilities.
For the first part of the project, SMUD and Stem will work with volunteer residential and commercial customers who have solar photovoltaic installations. The work will collect data about the distribution and stability of the grid with many different installations of solar power on the system.
“We’re looking forward to exploring the potential for the greater integration of solar energy into Sacramento’s electric distribution system,” Mark Rawson, a project manager with SMUD, said in a news release. “Stem’s technology will enable us to both gather information and test solutions to possibly enable more clean energy in our community.”
